An Appeal to Our Stakeholders Aug 02, 2017
Posted on 08/02/2017
helpDear District #205 stakeholder:

As I am sure you are aware, the Illinois General Assembly and Governor Rauner are currently at odds over the proper method of funding public schools. As a result of this disagreement, there is currently no funding mechanism in place to send state aid to any public school in the state. This situation is made even more difficult due to the fact that the federal government has not yet committed any funds towards public education for this next fiscal year. Galesburg #205 has historically received over $2 Million from the federal government and in excess of $15 Million from the state via General State Aid (the district receives other state revenue, as well, but the disagreement in question right now is dealing with General State Aid). Without these crucial funds, the district will be facing a very difficult future.

If these revenues do not start flowing to the district by October, we will be forced to borrow money in order to continue the operation of each school. By March, all of our borrowing options will be exhausted and the district will be forced to close its doors.

To be clear, the district will begin the year on time (first day for students is Tuesday, August 15) and we will keep our doors open as long as we can. We are writing you today to keep you as informed as possible and we are asking for your help.

Please take the time to contact our area legislators to tell them that this issue needs to be resolved immediately for the sake of all of our children. For your convenience, their names and contact information are located below.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
