Physical Education and Public Speaking aren't always thought of as two subject matters that can go hand in hand. However, Mr. Turner, physical education teacher at Churchill Middle School, has implemented new ways to assess student knowledge in his classes, while also utilizing the K-12 Writing and Public Speaking rubric.
With the launch of the K-12 Writing and Public Speaking rubrics in District 205 this year, Mr. Turner rethought his form of student assessment. Recognizing that student choice is powerful for student engagement, Mr. Turner offered 4 options for assessment during the archery unit with sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Assessment options were: demonstration of a skill, create a poster, create a Google Slides presentation, or write an informational paper. Topics students could focus upon were archery skills, archery rules, history of archery, or spotlight an archer.
