The Galesburg Area Vocational Center hosted a "Trades Talk" on Tuesday, January 30th for GHS and area high school students.
The Trades Talk provided students with the opportunity to hear from representatives from various apprenticeship training centers & local unions. The representatives from each union discussed the apprenticeship program, application process, classes in the program, potential jobs and careers in the specific program, and traits/characteristics they are looking for in apprentices. Students were also encouraged to ask the representatives questions about their respective programs.
"Our goal in hosting this event is to provide students with information on these trades and the opportunities each would offer. Additionally, this is an excellent opportunity for our local business partners to interact and network with our students. These interactions very well may lead to jobs, career opportunities, and/or admission to apprenticeship programs that will be present that day", according to GAVC Director, Adam Seaney.
Students need to have as much information as possible to make an as informed decision as possible. Students left with questions answered and perhaps some ideas as to what they would like to do after high school.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our industry partners for taking time out of their day to present and interact with our students.
