Sal Kisler, a junior at Galesburg High School, earned the top score in the annual 2024 Irma Gale American History Scholarship competition held at GHS on May 21, 2024.
Kisler, the son of Pat and Nicole Kisler of Galesburg, edged out 10 other junior competitors to earn the top score on the 100-question test. For his academic effort, Kisler will receive a $50 scholarship from the Irma Gale American History Scholarship Fund and will be recognized at the 2025 Senior Award Night at GHS.
Irma Gale was a beloved Galesburg High School Social Studies teacher during the era of the 1920-40s. Born in Germany in 1873, she immigrated to the United States. In 1900, she married George Candee Gale, the grandson of one of the city of Galesburg’s founding fathers, Reverend George Washington Gale. Mrs. Gale loved the American story and the Galesburg community her family helped found.
At her death in 1964, Irma Gale established a trust, providing multiple scholarships for deserving Galesburg High School students. These scholarships continue today, 60 years after her passing. Irma Reel Gale is buried in Galesburg’s historic Hope Cemetery.
