On Wednesday, October 9, King Elementary staff and students showcased their new outdoor fitness equipment area named the "Fit Pit" along with representatives from OSF HealthCare, Kleine Pediatric Wellness Center, Give Back Galesburg, Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Galesburg Area Vocational Center students, the GHS Marching Streaks, and community volunteers.
From weighted hula hoops, pullup stations, and horizontal ladders to step-up stations and parallel bars, each aspect of the Fit pit was designed to get kids healthy and provide them with unique activities that will inspire them to participate in more fitness activities.
The latest exercise equipment at King Elementary (Silas Willard and Steele currently have their own Fit Pit equipment) is part of the Project Fit America (PFA) program. This national nonprofit organization creates and administers fitness in education programming in elementary and middle schools.
Student leaders were selected at King last week and joined King Physical Education Teacher, Jennifer Atwell, to receive training by PFA Trainer, Ken Chambless, on how each piece of equipment works. We also were fortunate to have Kane Miller, Silas Willard's Physical Education Teacher, and Chad Kirkhove, Steele's Physical Education teacher join at the training to bring lessons back to the students at their schools.
We want to thank the OSF HealthCare Kleine Pediatric Wellness Center and Give Back, Galesburg for their investment in the health and wellness of our local children and community.
The equipment installation was made possible thanks to the efforts of local volunteers and students in the GAVC Building and Trades class.
The student leaders were given special t-shirts to wear thanks to the King Elementary PTO.
